For more general information on these photos, see my pond pictures page index.
Note that photos of the ponds that also happen to show fish are not usually shown on this page so check out the other pages for more fish photos.

I was in the pond on 6/24/07 and took this photo of the fish.
Pond fish - my big koi, Maggie, is in the
middle. The two big orfe are at the top of the photo. One of the baby orfe is below the big orfe
on the right. The rest are goldfish. I count parts of 18 goldfish.
Close-up of Maggie from the previous photo which
also shows a close-up of the baby orfe and seven goldfish.
Pond fish under the pond net on 6/23/07. You can see mostly goldfish. An orfe is in the upper left of the photo, and another is on the bottom right but harder to see. My koi, Colin (white) and Maggie (orange, just her rear can be seen) are at the top right of the photo. You can also see the floating island of impatiens.
I had a goldfish with large tumors on its head that mostly laid on the bottom for the last year of
its life. I finally found the poor guy deceased on 6/10/07. I took photos to show the tumors
which felt hard. The tumors were more white when he was alive. Note that he had been dead a
few days so if you do not like to look at dead animals, please do not click on the photos
below.

Three new orfe still in the bag on 5/11/07. One
is in mid gasp!
Three new orfe and bullfrog tadpole (view above
the bag) on 5/11/07 before release.

the bag) on 5/11/07 before release.
Pond fish being fed on 4/29/07. You can see the floating pond pellets and Cheerios. My two koi, Maggie (orange) and Colin (white) can be seen in the middle. One of the orfe can be seen on the far left. The rest of the fish are goldfish. There is a net over this part of the pond.
From the 153 gallon pond cleaning on 3/29/07:
Two crane flies, a green frog tadpole, and a baby
rosy red minnow in the bucket.

rosy red minnow in the bucket.
Dead male Southern redbelly dace - I was super
sad to find him. I took his photo because, even in death, he was gorgeous.
Rosy red minnows - 6 adults, 6 babies in
the bucket.

the bucket.
On 3/15/07, I found a dead 3" male rosy red minnow floating in my 153 gallon pond. I think the raccoon beat him up, he escaped, and he later died. You can see that he is bruised. Here is the photo.
Pond fish on 1/6/07. All of my three orfe
and two koi are in the photo with most of the goldfish. There is a net over the water.
Orfe - this is a close-up of the orfe in the previous
photo.
Pond fish on 9/24/06. Maggie and Colin
are at the upper left. The rest are goldfish.
Pond fish on 9/24/06. My two koi (Maggie
and Colin) are marked as are a few goldfish, my upside-down orfe, and a healthy orfe.
Sick orfe - this is my orfe that has been upside down for months. He/she is also now becoming anorexic. This was taken on 8/31/06.
My only remaining fancy goldfish in my 1800 gallon pond died on 7/4/06. This 7.5" female
fantail (maybe part oranda) was orange and white. You can read more about her in my August 2006 newsletter (not on-line until August). Here are two
photos.
Dead fantail - right side with ruler.
Dead fantail - left side.
Pond fish with the net pulled back on 4/30/06. This photo is labeled. The labels are black and hard to see but I marked two orfe (left and top), my koi Colin (right), my koi Maggie (top), my one fantail (bottom middle), and my big black goldfish who is turning orange (bottom right). The rest of the fish are various goldfish.
Pond fish under the net on 4/19/06. They are
mostly goldfish. My koi, Colin, is at the bottom with algae growing on him. Two of my orfe are
on the far right.
Maggie - my big koi Maggie under the net on
4/19/06. She was feeling under the weather with a few infected patches on her back.
Pond fish under the net on 12/11/05. You can
see my koi, Maggie, as well as some of the orfe and goldfish.
Pond fish under the net on 12/11/05. Maggie
is there again as is one of orfe who has a bent spine.
On 8/14/05, one of my 18" golden orfe was found stranded in the shallow area of the waterfall
following a power outage on a hot day with a plant-covered pond. He probably was trying to
jump to get some oxygen. So, here are rare photos of a big orfe out of water. He was a beauty.
I was very upset. I am sure the other three big orfe miss him.
Orfe - left side.
Orfe - right side
Orfe - top view. This is how I was used to seeing
him. The orfe was much deeper bodied than I thought. From the top, the orfe look really skinny
and have those black dots. But, from the sides, he almost looks like a goldfish.
Fish under the net on 5/27/05. Most are
goldfish but
all four orfe and one of my koi (Colin) are in the photo (can you find them? Two orfe are near
the bottom of the photo.).
Fish under the net on 5/27/05. I see three
of my
orfe and both of my koi in this more distant photo.
Dead goldfish from my 1800 gallon pond on
2/22/05. This 10" mostly white probably female goldfish with red on her tail and red lipstick was
pulled from my pond twice that day by the heron. He/she stripped some scales off the front end
of the fish but most likely, this poor last of the big goldfish in my pond died from being out of
water too long. I guess the heron could not swallow her. Read more about this in my March newsletter (on-line by 3/12/05).
Fish in the 1800 gallon pond on 1/9/05. The
two koi, Maggie and Colin, and the orfe are marked, semi-close-up.
Fish in the 1800 gallon pond on 1/9/05,
farther away.
Four fantails in a small bowl for photos. The
fish were added to the 20 gallon indoor tub pond on 11/5/04 after this photo was taken. The far
left fish is a calico fantail. The upper right fish was a chocolate telescope-eyed fantail but he got
sucked into the filter and died the first night (I fixed the problem). The other two fish are orange
and white fantails. The fish are only about an inch long so very young.
Red and white fantail close-up, 11/5/04. This is
a close-up of one of the above fish.
Jack - top view, dead 14" female comet that I bought in 1996 on
9/1/04.
Jack - right side view, 9/1/04.
Jack - left side view, scales may appear injured but it is just the
reflection from the light on the camcorder (which also does digital photos), 9/1/04.
Male red shiner - left side, 3/29/04.
Male red shiner - left side, same fish, 3/29/04.
Male red shiner - right side, same fish, 3/29/04.
Female red shiner - left side, 3/29/04.

Rosy red minnows - male on bottom front, female in the back,
3/29/04.
Rosy red minnows - two females (not the same individual as previous
female), 3/29/04.
These eight photos were all taken on 12/28/03 because the pond was warm and free of ice, the water was clear, and there is no cover so this is the best time to get good fish photos!
Pond fish - close-up of Colin (a koi), orfe, and goldfish.

and goldfish.
Orfe close-up - with medium goldfish for comparison.

and a reflection of the house on the water.

photo) with eight goldfish.

Paradise Fish on 6/13/03 before going into the 20 gallon mosaic pond. The male is on the top, and the female is on the bottom (not a reflection). To see more photos of them taken once they were brought inside for the season, see my paradise fish page.

Rosy red minnows being transferred from my basement pond to my 153 gallon pond on 4/12/03. The large fish in the front is a mature
male.
Rosy red minnows being transferred from my basement pond to my 153 gallon pond on 4/12/03. This photo was taken a few seconds
apart
from the last one so the fish have moved a little. The large fish in the front is a mature male.
Guppies being transferred from the basement pond to the mosaic
pond
out
front on 4/12/03. This is a female (bottom) and male (top).
Guppies being moved on 4/12/03. This shows two females.
Southern redbelly dace on 4/2/03 during 153 gallon pond cleaning
when he
was removed and then photographed in a glass bowl. Isn't he a beauty?!
Male red shiner (I think) on 4/2/03 during 153 gallon pond
cleaning.
Female red shiner (I think) on 4/2/03 during 153 gallon pond
cleaning.
Goldfish in the process of changing color in the 1800 gallon pond in
April of 2003.
Pond Fish in the 1800 gallon pond on 3/23/03. The fish made it after
the
worst winter in 100 years! Along the bottom from left to right are an orfe, Colin (koi), and
Maggie (koi). The rest are mostly goldfish. You can see the waterfall, pump intake with floss at
the
top of the photo, and the house is reflected in the water, distorting the view.

Pond Fish in the 1800 gallon pond on 8/1/02. The photo shows
mostly goldfish but there is one orfe.
Dead comet found in 1800 gallon pond, 7/5/02. This 9" red and white
comet female was found in the pond dead. She was full of roe (eggs). There were no obvious
injuries or signs of anything wrong with her aside from her agape mouth and the fact that she was
dead. Apparently, she went into the shallows to spawn on this 95 degree F day and got stuck out
of water and suffocated.
Southern redbelly dace on 3/29/02. I finally developed and scanned
this
photo of two male Southern redbelly dace and one unknown fish on 5/26/03 taken 14 months
earlier
when cleaning the 153 gallon pond.

Pond fish in the 1800 gallon pond on 3/9/02; Maggie (koi) is at the
bottom. An orfe is also in the photo.
Pond fish in the 1800 gallon pond on 12/26/01. The two koi and
some orfe can be seen among the many goldfish.
Pond fish in the 1800 gallon pond on 12/26/01. Arrows mark the
two koi and two of the four orfe in this photo where they are among the goldfish.

Hurt goldfish, right side, deep wound at top,
10/29/01.
Hurt goldfish, left side, minor wounds, injured
gill cover, torn tail, 10/29/01.
This fish was removed from my 1800 gallon pond and put into a 5 gallon tank for treatment after
being severely injured. She looks like someone ran a cheese grater over her. See the health page case studies for more detailed
information.
Basketball goldfish taken 10/14/01, tummy down.
This 8-inch fish is
dead
from a long-term medical problem. See the health page
case studies for more detailed information. I suspect the fish, which grew slowly over a few
years, had a kidney malfunction. She was a regular comet, not a fancy goldfish!

This is another view of the above dead fish.

Koi - June 2001, Maggie (orange butterfly koi) on top, Colin (white
butterfly koi) on bottom, shubunkin goldfish on right.
Orfe - June 2001.

Pond Fish - 4/30/01, three orfe on the left, two koi in the middle
Pond Fish - 3/25/01, some orfe at the top, two koi on far right
Pond Fish - 3/25/01, three orfe at the top, my two koi bunched in
the middle of all those goldfish!
Pond Fish - 3/25/01, it looks like a trillion fish!

For June of 2000, I took a series of photos which show many fish. See above here for the feeding sequence. The fish are marked right on the photos. If you want me to identify any particular fish, e-mail me.
Female fathead minnow - okay, so she is in my 20 gallon tank but this is a closeup taken 9/4/00.

Lots of fish - from near the top to the bottom are included two koi (Maggie and Colin in the upper left), three orfe, Remmy (large black koi in the middle), tons of goldfish and rosy red minnows, and a black moor at the bottom, 2/20/99. If you want to know what a specific fish is, e-mail me.
Lots of fish - mostly goldfish, 2/20/99.
Lots of fish - Remmy (koi at bottom left with orange head), lots of goldfish, two large golden orfe (bottom right), two small orfe (top right), 2/20/99.

Rosy red minnows - rosy red minnows gathered near the pump in late October, 1998. My mother's reflection can be seen. A few bits of salvinia can be seen floating.
Pond fish at feeding hole, 9/6/98. You must see this one! Below is the key for the numbers next to the plants and animals. These are but a few of my pond animals that come to feed.
1 = common goldfish, orange with white fins
2 = Maggie, metallic orange with some black, butterfly koi
3 = common goldfish, orange with white fins
4 = common goldfish, orange with white fins
5 = fantail goldfish, orange with white fins
6 = comet goldfish, orange and white
7 = comet goldfish, orange with white fins
8 = sarassa comet, orange and white
9 = Remmy, black and orange butterfly koi, about one foot long (died 3/21/99)
10 = common goldfish, orange with white fins
11 = shubunkin goldfish
12 = goldfish (looks like a blob to me)
13 = yellow primrose creeper
14 = water hyacinth
15 = albata lily pads
16 = salvinia (it covered the entire surface of the pond except this feeding hole)
Ones I forgot: Below #11 and to the right of #12 is Bunky, the baby shubunkin, born in the
pond; below Remmy and to the right of Bunky are a few orange blobs which are some rosy red
minnows; and to the right of fish #3 and above fish #4 is a baby golden orfe!
