On 7/21/2025, I moved the animals from my 6 and 12 gallon nano reef tanks to the 20 gallon tank.
For the story of this tank, see the reef blog.
The current inventory of this tank is below.
Added 7/4/25:
7.9 pounds of Nature's Ocean Aragonite gravel, rinsed twice with saltwater. I have had this for years. It was a 10 pound bag. Yes, I weighed it.
20 pounds of Caribsea Arag-Alive live reef sand.
~15 gallons of saltwater I made all week using RO water and Coral Pro salt. Final specific graveity of 1.023. Yep, a 20 gallon tank only holds 15 gallons! Well, my 12 gallon nano reef only took 9 gallons. If the 6 gallon took 4.5 (I didn't leave a note for it so I don't know for sure), then that's 13.5 gallons total so 15 gallons will be 1.5 gallons more. So, still better! Of course, once the live rock is in, the volume will go way down.
All live rock from the 6 and 12 gallon tanks were moved on 7/21/25.
1 Oscellaris clownfish - added 5/21/08 to 12 gallon, moved to 20 gallon on 7/21/25. His name is, of course, Nemo. Well, Nemo became a female somewhere along the way! I got her a boyfriend below.
1 Black Oscellaris clownfish - added 7/26/25 to 12 gallon for quarantine, moved to 20 gallon on 8/16/25. His name is Nori.
3 Astrea snails from the 12 gallon and 1 from the 6 gallon were moved in on 7/21/25.
4 Nassarius snails and 4 margarita snails were bought and added on 8/18/25.
1 Scarlet reef hermit crab - added on 3/23/19 to 12 gallon, moved to 20 gallon 7/21/25.
7 Blue-legged hermit crab - one added on 4/10/23 to 6 gallon, 6 added on 4/7/25 to 6 gallon, all moved to 20 gallon 7/21/25.
Green star polyps (GSP) and mushroom corals from 6 and 12 gallon tanks moved 7/21/25. There were no other surviving species of coral. I am trying to keep the GSP where I want them by keeping them on their own islands and attached to magnetic feeding clips on the wall. The main rock from the old 6 gallon reef tank is just covered in mushrooms. I call it mushroom island. The main rock from the old 12 gallon tank I scraped clean of GPS, and that is where I put many of the corals below that I later added.
I added four corals on 7/26/25:
1 green Ricordea mushroom with an extra big vermetid snail attached.
3 zooanthids (1 green middle, red edges; two with green middle and brown edges).
I added two corals on 8/18/25:
1 Duncan LPS coral
1 Montipora SPS coral (green)
On 9/3/25, I added two Kenya soft corals to the tank. I only paid for one, and I ended up with three. One was on a piece of rock. One I got to anchor to a shell. The third I found later that must have detached.
I did my best to try to reduce their numbers but loads of Aiptasia, vermetic snails, and fireworms came over with the move on 7/21/25. As of 10/2/25, I am now thinking that my "Aiptasia" may in fact be another kind of small anemone. They are pretty well behaved and do not have long arms or spread a lot.
Strangely, the tons of amphipods seemed to be missing during the move so I do not know where they all went!
On 7/26/25, I added two peppermint shrimp named Crystal and Grotto. I last saw them exactly a week later.
I added two sexy shrimp on 8/18/25.
Coralline algae came with the moved live rock and will start to grow in the new tank.
